We’ve hired several young, entry level workers, and we’re hoping to maximize our opportunity with them. Not sure if anyone at age 21 knows what they want to do, but you have to start somewhere. How do we tap into their potential without burning them out?
Thoughts of the Day: There are many reasons to figure out how to hire and retain an entry level workforce. Be sure to consider the young workforce’s needs when it comes to retention, but don’t forget to deal with the basic needs of every employee regardless of age or experience. Add doses of supervision, mentoring and coaching.
We’re getting frustrated with the amount of effort needed to manage some of our employees. If we don’t babysit them, whatever they’re supposed to be doing more often than not falls off the table – either poorly done or not done at all. Feel like it’s becoming the issue du jour around here. They just need to do their job right and on time. Is that asking too much?
THOUGHTS OF THE DAY: Manage the assignments effectively. Hire for motivation. Give people a mission. Set up measuring sticks. Don’t tolerate defectors.
It’s up to me to organize the workflow – which is all about being in the office to oversee what’s going on. But I also have to arrange time when I don’t have to be in the office so I can be out selling. Those are my top two goals as the owner and leader of my company. How can you help me do a good job at both?
Thoughts of the Day: All business owners have lots of demands on their time and knowing the priorities helps them stay on point. No business owner can do it alone, it takes a team to pull the business into the future. Knowing what to do now and what to put down for later makes it possible to accomplish more of the right things over longer timeframes.
Our industry is going through a tremendous amount of change. We have to get ahead of the curve or we risk being left behind in a declining business. We need to figure out how to present ourselves in the best light to create opportunity in the future. What should we say about our future when we talk to potential and existing clients? What will result in a thriving, profitable business?
THOUGHTS OF THE DAY: Build a business that’s worth having in the future. Talk to successful, thriving customers about where they’re going and what they’ll need. Create a voice that mirrors your most profitable, forward-thinking customers and prospects.
We’re trying to figure out how much our people can produce without going to another shift or farming work out to someone else. We have no clue whether it makes sense to hire more production people, or if we do add people, what kinds of people to add.
Thoughts of the Day: Don’t waste potential guessing how to increase capacity, when simple math will yield concrete answers. Start with figuring out how much your firm can realistically produce under current conditions. Then look for production limitations to fix and efficiency and sales opportunities to capitalize on.
