I am so wrapped up in the day-to-day activities of my business that I don’t get around to working on the big picture. How much of a problem is this, really? After all, I love the work we do and I’m really good at it.
Thoughts of the day: A business needs more than the work it does. An owner has an obligation to the business, to ensure that it stays around to continue doing what it does to serve the needs of its customers and employees. By organizing and overseeing the business you can also ensure you get to do the work you want to do long into the future.

I’m not a good trainer. I need to be mindful of that while ramping up a business development person — our next important hire. And I need to use this opportunity to get better at training because it’s a critical skill to have.
Thoughts of the day: Be a role model. Have patience. Let your trainee make mistakes and learn from them. Let your passion show through. Don’t try to teach everything at once. Learn about the person you’re training. Back up your training with reference materials.
My partner does not respond in a timely manner. Not only does it slow me down, it hurts the productivity of the rest of the organization. He’s a good guy and I know he cares and is committed. I do think that as owners sometimes we’re not accountable enough. Got any suggestions on what to do about this?
Thoughts of the day: Ask people to be accountable. Change their thinking. Be significant. Recognize and reward good behavior. Make sure you’re on the same page.
It’s sad that when a guy does it right that we get excited, our expectations are so low. We expect things to go wrong and somehow they do — a lot! It’s such a struggle. What should we be doing to lead our company in a better direction, where doing it right is the norm, and we celebrate real excellence?
Thoughts of the Day: Celebrating when things go right is good, it’s the standard of excellence that needs work. Be clear about whether or not people want to play your game and give decision-making power. Know that you can’t save someone who won’t try to save themselves. Things can get so much easier.
Feels like over the last year I’ve put an extreme amount of effort in to change the company’s culture. Things are getting better, but there’s still a lot more to go. Still have people here who aren’t drinking the Kool-Aid. Suggestions?
Thoughts of the day: Getting buy-in to change can be challenging. Expose everyone to your message. Walk it, talk it, wear it — you’re the leader. Figure out where the lack of buy-in is coming from. Give people a reason to want to change.
